In 2012, Pacific Dunes once again tops Pebble Beach —barely — as decided by our esteemed panelists. Nipping at Pacific and Pebble’s heels is Pinehurst No. 2, which surged four spots, to third place, thanks to Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw’s inspired restoration.

The revolution in natural-motion shoes, laid bare
If we could play golf barefoot, many of us would. There is something about the tactile softness of cut grass vs. the confines of traditional golf shoes that inspires rebellion, the desire to feel free, to spread one’s toes in the earth -- to perhaps grip it and rip it, from the ground up.

Notes: Shorter 2013 season means larger fields
A shorter season on the PGA Tour in 2013 will mean slightly larger fields for as many as nine tournaments.
It's a move designed to help players who earn their cards through Q-school or the Web.com Tour. They are at the bottom of the priority rankings for getting into tournaments, and spots can be rare in the early part of the season with smaller fields due to limited daylight. If they didn't qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs, they at least had four Fall Series tournaments to make up ground to get into the top 125 and keep their cards.
